Social Networks And The Internet - 2017 Words

Social networks and the use of them are becoming increasingly common in today’s globalizing world. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr and other social media networks have become fixtures in our culture and have become a part of the lives of its everyday users. The Internet, in part, has allowed social media networks to establish a way to transfer, store, and share private information about those that use it. This information can shared with other corporations and governments which can then be used to track, monitor, and create a perfect agent of the user. The private information shared can typically be done without knowledge of the user, but with the consent given under the â€Å"terms of service agreement† on the initial sign up. Privacy†¦show more content†¦In this ever evolving technological world, social networks and the laws surrounding them are extensively out of date. An article published by Duke Law Technology Review, published in 2014, entitled, â⠂¬Å"Reasonable Expectations of Privacy Settings: Social Media and the Stored Communications Act† exemplifies the essential need of additional and modernized laws. The article refers to the specific regulation known as the Stored Communications Act passed by Congress in 1986. The article states the goal of the (CSA) is â€Å"to provide additional protections for individuals’ private communications content held in electronic storage by third parties† (Borchert, Pinguelo and Thaw 36-37). The difficulty with this is that minimal updates have been made to this law since its passing nearly 30 years ago. Additionally, the law has â€Å"†¦language specific to the technology of 1986, courts today have struggled to apply the SCA consistently with regard to similar private content sent using different technologies† (Borchert, Pinguelo and Thaw 38-39). What is more troublesome is that today’s technology can no longer correlated to the technology of 1986. F urther arguments towards stricter and enhanced laws is furthered pressed in the article when the original intent of â€Å"SCA† was to be the framework of an ever evolving protections for individual’s privacy rights with third parties.
